Why the Ice Builds in the Same Place Every Year

Ice damming is a heat problem that presents as a gutter problem. Warm air escaping into the roof space melts snow high on the roof, the meltwater runs down under the snowpack, and when it reaches the eave, which is cold because there is no heated space beneath it, it refreezes. Do that for a week and you have a ridge of ice at the edge holding the next melt behind it. Water backs up under the shingles, and that is when it appears on a ceiling. The gutter does not cause this, but a full or badly pitched gutter gives the ice a base to build on and makes the ridge grow faster. There is a right way and a wrong way to take the ice off. Chipping at it with an axe or a hammer damages shingles and splits trough, and we have replaced plenty of gutter that survived the winter and did not survive the removal. Low pressure steam melts the ice out without touching the roof underneath. Clearing the ice is the emergency. It is not the fix. The fix is upstream of the eave, in the trough being clear before the freeze, in outlets that are sized and placed where the water needs to leave, and in soffit venting that has not been closed off during some earlier job.

Winter work runs in two parts. In the moment, the eave gets steamed clear and the downspouts opened so meltwater has somewhere to go, and we look at the ceiling below for anything that has already got in. Then, when conditions allow, we walk the same eave and say what made it form there: a run holding standing water, an outlet in the wrong place, a soffit vent path that has been blocked. Those get quoted as ordinary work, done in the warm months, so the next winter is not a repeat of this one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gutter Services can be complex, and we’re here to provide answers to common questions. Here are some frequently asked questions from our clients.

Frequently Asked Questions about gutter cleaning grand rapids mi

How much should a gutter cleaning cost in Walker?

There is no single figure, because cost follows the total run of gutter, the height and pitch of the roof, and how compacted the debris has become. A single-story ranch with open troughs and a two-story with guards over packed leaf load are not comparable jobs. We price after seeing the roofline, and the number we give is the number on the invoice.

What is the best month to get your gutters cleaned in Michigan?

Plan on two visits, one in spring and one late in fall. The fall visit matters most here because anything left in the trough freezes solid and turns a drainage problem into an ice problem. Spring clears what came down over winter and lets you see what the ice actually did to the seams and hangers.

How often should gutters be cleaned in Michigan?

Twice a year covers most homes. Lots with mature oak and maple overhead often need a third pass in late November, after the last leaf drop but before anything freezes. If you are emptying troughs more often than that, the problem is usually pitch or an undersized downspout rather than the leaf itself.

What causes ice dams on gutters in Michigan?

Heat escaping through the roof melts snow at the ridge, the meltwater runs down and refreezes at the cold eave, and the ridge of ice that builds there holds the next melt behind it. Full or poorly pitched gutters make it worse by giving the ice a place to anchor. Clearing the trough before the first hard freeze is the cheapest thing you can do about it.

Do I need gutter guards in West Michigan?

It depends on what is above the roof and what the pitch is. Under heavy oak and maple canopy, a good screen or micro-mesh cuts cleanings back sharply. On a steep roof that already sheds well, guards can shed water straight over the trough in a downpour and cost you more than they save. We say which one you have before quoting the work.

What is the difference between seamless and sectional gutters?

Sectional gutter comes in lengths that are joined on site, and every joint is a seam that can open as the metal moves through freeze and thaw. Seamless is rolled to the length of the run on site, so the only joints are at corners and outlets. On long straight runs the difference in how long the system stays watertight is substantial.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ice Dam and Winter Drainage

How do you remove an ice dam without damaging the roof?

Low pressure steam, worked from the edge inward, melts channels through the ice so the backed-up water can drain and then takes the ridge down. Mechanical removal with picks or hammers cracks shingles and splits trough, and salt products aimed at the roof shorten shingle life and stain siding. Steam costs more per hour and less overall.

Should I put heat cable in the gutter?

Heat cable manages symptoms and can be the right call on a stubborn eave, particularly over an entry where falling ice is a hazard. It works best run in the trough and down the outlet as well as along the eave, so the melt has a clear path out rather than pooling and refreezing lower down. It is not a substitute for clearing the trough or for fixing venting.

When should winter drainage work be done?

The clearing work belongs before the first hard freeze, which around here means finishing after the last leaf drop rather than in October by habit. The corrective work, meaning pitch, outlets, fascia and venting, is warm-weather work. Booking it in spring, right after you have watched where the ice formed, is the most useful timing.

Does cleaning gutters in fall prevent ice dams?

It removes one of the contributing conditions, not the cause. A clear, correctly pitched trough gives meltwater a route away from the eave instead of a basin to freeze in, so dams form later and smaller. The cause is heat reaching the roof deck, and that is addressed with attic insulation and open soffit venting.
